# Stock / Equity Research

Research a publicly traded company: gather financial data, perform valuation (DCF, P/E comparables, dividend sustainability), identify risks, and deliver an investment recommendation with price targets.

## When to Use

- User asks to "analyze", "research", "evaluate" a stock or ticker
- Valuation request: underpriced/overpriced, fair value, intrinsic value
- Dividend analysis: yield, safety, sustainability
- Peer comparison: sector peers, industry multiples
- Risk assessment: commodity prices, interest rates, FX exposure
- Investment thesis: buy/sell/hold recommendation with price targets

## Research Workflow

### Phase 1 — Gather Key Data (Browser + APIs)

**Priority sources in order:**
1. **Google Finance** — `https://www.google.com/finance/quote/{TICKER}:{EXCHANGE}` — Most reliable, no bot detection, includes AI-generated bullish/bearish analysis, key metrics (P/E, EPS, market cap, 52-wk high/low, dividend yield, volume), related stocks, and news. For IDX tickers use `{TICKER}:IDX`. The "5Y" chart tab gives long-term return context.
2. **TradingView** — `https://www.tradingview.com/symbols/{EXCHANGE}-{TICKER}/` — Detailed financials, technical indicators (RSI, MA, MACD), but may trigger bot detection
3. **Stockbit** (IDX stocks) — `https://stockbit.com/symbol/{TICKER}` — Community sentiment, streaming discussion
4. **Yahoo Finance API** — `https://query2.finance.yahoo.com/v10/finance/quoteSummary/{TICKER}?modules=summaryDetail,defaultKeyStatistics,financialData` — Often rate-limited; use as fallback
5. **Investing.com** — `https://www.investing.com/equities/{slug}` — Alternative data source

**Google Finance data extraction tip:** The Overview tab includes AI-generated "Bullish view" and "Bearish view" sections with specific financial metrics (revenue growth, margin changes, production volumes). These are valuable for fundamental analysis. The related stocks section at the bottom is useful for finding peer companies for comparison.

**Key metrics to extract:**

### Phase 2 — DCF Valuation

**Inputs needed:**
- Free Cash Flow (approximate from Net Income if cash flow statement unavailable)
- Growth rate assumption (5-10% for mature companies, 10-15% for growth)
- Terminal growth rate (typically 3% = long-term GDP growth)
- Discount rate / WACC (typically 10% for emerging markets, 8% for developed)
- Net debt = Total debt - Cash

**Formula:**

PV of TV = TV / (1 + WACC)^n
Enterprise Value = Σ PV(FCF) + PV(TV)
Equity Value = EV - Net Debt
Intrinsic Value per Share = Equity Value / Shares Outstanding

**Assessment:**
- If current price << intrinsic value → UNDERVALUED
- Margin of safety = (Intrinsic - Current) / Intrinsic

### Phase 3 — Peer P/E Comparison

**Build peer table:**

### Phase 4 — Dividend Sustainability

**Metrics:**

Dividend Cover = Net Income / Dividends (higher = safer)

**Safety thresholds:**
- Payout ratio < 50% → Generally safe
- Payout ratio < 30% → Very safe, room to grow
- Dividend cover > 2x → Acceptable
- Dividend cover > 4x → Strong

### Phase 5 — Risk Factors

**Always assess these 5 risk categories:**

**Use beta (market sensitivity) and debt levels as quick indicators.**

### Phase 6 — Investment Recommendation

**Output structure:**
1. **Overall rating** — BUY / HOLD / SELL (with star rating)
2. **Price targets** — Conservative / Base / Optimistic
3. **Entry price** — Current price
4. **Stop loss** — Typically -15% to -20% from entry
5. **Time horizon** — 12-18 months typical
6. **Key bull case** — Why it could work
7. **Key risk case** — Why it could fail (value trap warning if applicable)

## IDX (Indonesia) Specific Notes

- Ticker format: `GJTL.JK` (Yahoo), `IDX:GJTL` (TradingView), `GJTL:IDX` (Google Finance), or just `GJTL` (local)
- Google Finance is the most reliable source for IDX stocks (no bot detection, no rate limits)
- Financial data in IDR trillions (`T`) or billions (`B`)
- Dividend yields often high (5-8%) due to value stocks
- Market cap categories: Big Cap (>10T), Mid Cap (1-10T), Small Cap (<1T)
- Key sector peers for automotive/tire: **GJTL** (tires, P/E ~3x), **SMSM** (auto parts, P/E ~9x), **DRMA** (Dharma Polimetal), **ASII** (Astra conglomerate)
- For IDX stocks, Google Finance Overview tab has the cleanest fundamental data + AI-generated bullish/bearish analysis
- Output in **Bahasa Indonesia** when the user communicates in Indonesian — use direct, concise language with tables and star ratings

**Common value trap warning:** Low PER/PBV alone is not enough — check 3-year earnings trend, FCF, DER, and dividend history. BUMI (Bumi Resources) is a documented value trap: -28% unrealized loss, sector under pressure from energy transition, governance issues.

## Common Data Problems & Fixes

| TradingView sub-tabs not loading | Navigate to main page first, then click Financials tab, THEN select sub-tab (Statements/Dividends/Earnings) — sub-tabs are within the Financials section, not separate URLs |
| **TradingView indicator injection fails** | The Indicators dialog loads via dynamic JS — clicking/typing in the search box is unreliable via DOM automation. Use `browser_console` to read chart OHLCV data directly instead |
| **execute_code venv broken for charts** | `execute_code` uses Hermes venv Python (version/path broken). Use `terminal()` with `python3.11` instead: first create venv `python3.11 -m venv /home/ubuntu/venv_trading && /home/ubuntu/venv_trading/bin/pip install pandas numpy matplotlib scipy -q`, then run via `terminal("/home/ubuntu/venv_trading/bin/python /path/to/script.py")` |

### Extracting Chart Data via browser_console

When you need price/OHLCV data from a TradingView chart (even without indicators), use JavaScript in the browser console:

This works even when the visual chart (canvas) cannot be captured or analyzed programmatically.

## Output Format

Deliver a structured analysis file containing:

1. **Data Table** — All key metrics with sources
2. **DCF Valuation** — Assumptions, projections, intrinsic value, margin of safety
3. **Peer Comparison** — P/E table with fair value calculations
4. **Dividend Analysis** — Yield, payout ratio, cover, safety assessment
5. **Risk Factors** — Table with risk level (HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW) and notes
6. **Investment Recommendation** — Rating, price targets, stop loss, time horizon
7. **Summary Table** — One-line verdict per section

Save as `/{ticker}_analysis.md` in user home or session directory.

**Chart scripts:**

**CRITICAL — Real-data Ichimoku workflow (do NOT use simulated data):**
1. Extract OHLC data from Yahoo Finance: `https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/{TICKER}.JK/history/`
2. Parse the CSV-like table from the page (Date, Open, High, Low, Close columns)
3. Feed parsed lists to `ichimoku_chart.py` via CSV string input
4. Python interpreter: **MUST use `python3.11` via `terminal()`** — NOT `execute_code` (venv python is broken), NOT `python3.12` (may lack matplotlib). Create venv first:

**Fallback — When Yahoo Finance / APIs are rate-limited (429):**
For commodities (gold, oil, XAU/USD) or any ticker when OHLC APIs are blocked, use the anchor-based chart generation workflow documented in `references/commodity_forex_chart_workflow.md`. Uses spline interpolation through known price anchors (ATH, current, swing low) to generate realistic price series for Ichimoku/Fibonacci analysis without API access.

## Rate Limits

- Yahoo Finance API: ~2,000 req/day per IP — use caching
- TradingView: No official API for fundamental data — scrape sparingly
- Alpha Vantage: Free tier 25 req/day — requires API key
- Semantic Scholar: 1 req/sec for citations (use for research not quotes)

Pass known data (price, P/E, EPS, market cap, dividend yield from Google Finance) in each subagent's `context` field so they don't waste time re-fetching. ## Technical Chart Generation (Ichimoku, Fibonacci)

When real-time OHLC data is unavailable (yfinance rate-limited, APIs blocked), generate charts using matplotlib with simulated price data anchored to known 52-week high/low/current price.

**Ichimoku Cloud chart:**
- Calculate Tenkan-sen (9-period), Kijun-sen (26-period), Senkou Span A/B, from price series
- Fill green cloud (bullish) where Senkou A ≥ B, red cloud (bearish) where A < B
- Key signals: Tenkan vs Kijun cross, price vs cloud position, cloud color

**Fibonacci retracement chart:**
- Levels: 0%, 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, 78.6%, 100% from 52-wk low to high
- "Golden Zone" (50%-61.8%) = key support/bounce zone
- Mark current price position relative to levels
